What if the very laws meant to protect children were instead used to legitimize their abuse? It sounds unthinkable, yet this is the stark reality uncovered by my guest, Donna Simmons. A survivor of child marriage and systemic betrayal, Donna’s story reveals how cycles of generational trauma, legal loopholes, and institutional silence continue to endanger countless young girls.

On this episode of Your Radical Truth Podcast, Donna shares her extraordinary journey from victim to advocate, exposing the hidden truths behind child marriage in America and the systems that allow predators to operate with impunity. Her courage not only sheds light on injustices too often ignored but also offers hope that change is possible when survivors refuse to be silenced.
Donna’s testimony is not just a personal account but a call to action. She takes us inside the devastating effects of generational abuse, the failures of mental health systems, and the shocking legal practices that have allowed thousands of child marriages to persist in the United States. At the same time, she shows us what resilience looks like when pain is transformed into purpose.
From Survivor to Advocate
Donna grew up in Kentucky, a state with a long history of child marriage and thousands of abuse cases hidden in plain sight. As a teenager, she endured horrific abuse within her own family and from a man in a position of authority at a mental health facility. By age 16, her mother had consented to her marriage to this man, handing him a license that allowed his predation to continue under the protection of law.
Rather than remain trapped, Donna chose to fight back. With remarkable determination, she pursued her education, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in business administration. She also founded a nonprofit to provide support for trauma survivors. Most importantly, she became a voice for the voiceless, successfully advocating for legislation in Kentucky that raised the minimum age of marriage and created new safeguards against exploitation.
Mental Health and the Path to Recovery
One of the most striking parts of our conversation was Donna’s emphasis on the role of mental health in trauma recovery. She spoke candidly about being institutionalized at age 14, only to be further victimized by someone who should have protected her. This betrayal left her struggling for years to trust therapy or professional help.
Donna’s story highlights a painful truth: while mental health care is essential to breaking cycles of trauma, it is not immune to corruption or abuse. Survivors often face barriers of accessibility, stigma, and mistrust. For Donna, much of her early healing was self-directed, an exhausting journey that she hopes others will not have to face alone. Her advocacy now stresses not only the importance of mental health services but also the need for accountability within those systems.
Generational and Systemic Abuse
As Donna explained, her story is not just about personal trauma but also about generational cycles of abuse. Her mother, herself a child bride and victim of abuse, passed down patterns of neglect and violence. This generational abuse was compounded by systemic failures: institutions that turned a blind eye, laws that legitimized predation, and government officials who refused to enforce existing protections.
The numbers are staggering. Since the year 2000, over 300,000 child marriages have been recorded in the United States. While Kentucky’s reforms have reduced the number of cases dramatically, violations of the law continue, and children still fall through the cracks. Donna calls this reality for what it is: state-sanctioned abuse.
The Lost Generation
Donna’s own podcast, The Last Generation, reflects her mission to end the perpetuation of trauma across family lines. She believes that unless we confront and heal our own wounds, we inevitably pass them down to our children. Her work is a call to accountability, not just for perpetrators but for the systems that enable abuse to continue. Through honest conversations about topics like jealousy, dysfunction, and parenting, her podcast fosters a culture of reflection and healing.
A Call to Action
In her memoir, From Ashes to Flame, Donna Simmons does more than recount her personal story. She uses her life experience to spark a revolution that
insists on accountability from individuals, institutions, and lawmakers. Her book shines a light on the realities of child marriage and generational abuse while offering a roadmap for change.
Donna’s work does not stop with her writing. She continues to push for national legislation that will once and for all end child marriage in the United States. As she reminds us, we do not need another study to confirm the damage done. What is needed now is action.
Her nonprofit, Survivors Corner, offers training for survivors who want to become advocates, as well as support groups that provide community and healing. For Donna, empowering survivors is not only about recovery but also about creating a movement strong enough to protect the next generation.
Heartbreak and Hope
My conversation with Donna Simmons left me with both heartbreak and hope. Heartbreak, because her story lays bare the tragic reality of children betrayed not only by families and predators, but by the very systems designed to protect them. Hope, because Donna embodies what it means to break free from those chains and to fight for others who cannot yet fight for themselves.
Her journey shows us that resilience is not simply survival. It is a choice to demand accountability, to transform pain into purpose, and to make sure the next generation does not suffer the same fate. Donna’s voice is more than testimony. It is a rallying cry for reform, compassion, and action.
I encourage you to learn more about her work at www.traumatopurpose.com and to read her memoir, available on Amazon and Audible. You will hear the story of a woman who refused to remain silent and, in doing so, has become a beacon for survivors everywhere.

With that realization, she truly felt in that moment, the monumental feeling of betrayal by her own Church.

past presence of Women Bishop’s, Women Deacons, as well as Women Priests, all there hiding in plain sight, in Early Church History.
