I had the pleasure of being a guest on The Highly Spiritual Person Podcast, hosted by Camille Elizabeth. We engaged in a candid conversation about women in the Catholic Church, delving specifically into the historical assertion that Jesus’ own mother, Mary, was a Woman Priest, titled ‘The Model For All Priesthood in the Catholic Church’ and referred to as Mary Priest.
For readers questioning why they haven’t encountered this information before, it’s noteworthy that the Church Fathers themselves have omitted this period of history, keeping it a secret from the laity.
During the podcast, Camille read a quote from my book, “Scandal in the Shadows: The Original Priest – Mother Mary,” reflecting on the incredulity I would have felt decades ago if someone had suggested I’d advocate for women priests. This lack of awareness about women’s role in Church history often leads to surprise and resistance among fellow Catholics when confronted with the idea.
Camille observed that the modern Catholic Church seems reluctant to address the topic of women’s ordination, almost as if it’s off the table entirely. The Church’s centuries-old assertion that there were never women priests effectively closed the door for discussion, leaving the Vatican unwilling to revisit the issue and potentially admit to past misleading statements.
When asked why I seek change within the Catholic Church rather than building something new, I emphasized that the contentious nature of the Women Priest issue stems from the hierarchy’s failure to disclose the factual truth to the laity. With the current priest shortage, embracing women’s equality and allowing for Women Priests could address this shortage and revitalize the Church, harkening back to a more inclusive and vibrant past.
